ATELIER COMPANIONS
In a corner of my atelier, a collection of companions have gathered over the art years. Some have come by and have gone. Others have remained faithful companions to my daily retreats.

WATER PUPPETS
The puppets are hand carved from the wood of Fig trees, hand painted, lacquered then waterproofed. A large bamboo rod supports the puppets under water. The puppeteers are hidden behind a screen, where they control the puppets' movements.
The puppets are used to tell Centuries old tales and are considered one of Viet Nam's most precious form of the Arts.

MATRYOSHKA {Mother} and BABUSHKA {Old woman} nesting dolls.
The dolls are still made today with a lathe then painted by hand. Wood used are Aspen Alder, Birch or Linden, most popular is Limewood. The nesting pieces can range from 3 to 30 dolls in a set. Countries of origins in my collection are from Russia, Poland and Estonia.
Gouache paint is used since it is more opaque than watercolours. No modern and state of the art equipment are used to create the dolls. The nesting dolls are works of art.
TOOLS
There will always be supplies we love and art supplies we simply can not live without. Mixed media adventurers sleuth out common tools and everyday objects we walk by.
The colour wheel is used everyday. Find and use your most favorite, loved bowls. Pencils, rulers and brushes.....many until they become too many. A collection of textiles and vintage fabrics is a must at all times.
The best thing about drawing, painting and slow stitching? The feeling of starting a blank sheet of paper, a canvas or a strip of fabric and end up with something that did not exist before. Created by me.
